Monton’s Veterans’ Shelter gets £25,000 funding for facelift

Monton’s Veterans’ Shelter is set to get a facelift after securing funding from the National Lottery’s heritage fund for its restoration.

The Monton Village Community Association (MVCA) applied for the grant – worth nearly £25,000 – saying the shelter in Monton Green was in need or some ‘tender, loving care’.

Organisers at the association said they were ‘delighted’ with the Heritage Fund grant.

The bid was made in partnership with Salford council .

A programme of walks, talks and events around the shelter in Monton Green is being planned, while a new history board detailing its origins will also be installed.

The shelter dates back to the 1930s.

Due to its name, many people believe that it is war-related. In fact, it refers to veterans of industry.

A community request back from 1928 asked for a place where locals could sit and chat away from the cold and rain, according to association’s web page.

In 1936 the Mayor of Eccles used the shelter to read the proclamation of the abdication of King Edward VIII.

Liz Harris, chair of MVCA said: “We’re delighted with the grant from the Heritage Fund which was secured in partnership with Salford council. Our community looks forward to seeing our unique shelter given a new lease of life.”

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, said: “The Veterans’ Shelter has served Monton for nearly 70 years and this work will preserve it for many more years to come.”
