Months of roadworks to begin on major A-road for new cycle path

South Gloucestershire Council is set to begin months of roadworks to allow for the installation of a brand new cycle track.

The A432 Badminton Road will be getting a new improved, safe cycle track after being identified as a key link between the A4174 Avon Ring Road and Yate and needing significant improvement.

Currently, the existing on-carriageway cycle facilities are well below the standards set out in the Government's Local Transport Note and therefore five months of works will be carried out to increase the standard.

South Gloucestershire Council Street Care team shared details on Facebook stating that from Monday, January 3, overnight road closures will be carried out between 8pm and 6am from Nibley Road and Coalpit Heath - a stretch of about one and a half miles.

These will last for just seven nights from Monday, January 3 until Sunday, January 9 and will act as stage one of the new cycle lane scheme.

Teams will remove all the existing road markings and install narrow lanes which will avoid the need to use temporary traffic signals during the first phase of the works.

However, temporary traffic lights will be required later on and the total length of the works will be five months long.

Badminton Road is one of the main routes between South Gloucestershire and Bristol city, stretching all the way from Yate to Downend.

South Gloucestershire Council consulted members of the public on the plan last year after the government made funding available to encourage more people to walk and cycle.

The four stages were detailed as:

  • Stage 1 – Nibley Lane to Coalpit Heath
  • Stage 2 – Coalpit Heath to A4174 Ring Road
  • Stage 3 – Nibley Lane to Stover Road
  • Stage 4 – Coalpit Heath Village
