Washington Redskins rookie DE Montez Sweat was a monster in college at Mississippi State—he has been a monster so far in spring camp as well.
Is there any chance that he will subvert expectations once the regular season comes along?
So far, there is no evidence to say this will be true, but as many Redskins’ fans know, getting your hopes up is dangerous, and potential injuries are always looming for when you least expect them. There is also the fact that Sweat dropped in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft due to a heart condition that was reportedly misdiagnosed. Though it is unlikely, there is a world where that pops up as an issue again in the future.
However, the positive signs for Sweat vastly outweigh the negatives, as displayed by Pro Football Focus on Tuesday.
In college, Sweat was dominant, and he is arguably one of the most talented defensive linemen in the 2019 draft class.
The stats say it all, Montez Sweat is a beast. Redskins coach Jay Gruden earlier gawked at how Sweat “eats up ground when he runs,” and he quickly won over the defensive coaching staff and players.
Sure, you may think it is out of the blue to question whether or not Sweat will find success in Washington—all of the signs from spring camp and past performances suggest the answer is yes. It’s just smart to be aware of the possibility, no matter how unlikely it is. There was a reason that Sweat ended up falling into the late-first round of the Draft—we can just hope it never comes back into play.
