Argentinian soccer superstar Lionel Messi's first official match in Mexico did not go as planned as he and his team, Inter Miami, suffered a 3-1 defeat against Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals.

Monterrey's Brandon Vazquez, Germán Berterame, and Gallardo found the back of the net to secure a convincing 5-2 aggregate victory over Miami. Vazquez opened the scoring in the 31st minute, followed by Berterame's goal in the 58th minute and Gallardo's strike in the 64th minute.

Messi, who started the match, had limited opportunities to make an impact and Miami's only goal came from Diego Gómez in the 85th minute. Despite the defeat, Miami coach Gerardo Martino acknowledged the team's efforts but expressed disappointment at being knocked out of the competition.

Monterrey's coach standout performance was praised by coach Fernando Ortiz, who expressed satisfaction at eliminating a formidable opponent like Miami. Ortiz had previously voiced concerns about the influence of Messi on the referees but was pleased with his team's disciplined display.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, returned to action after recovering from a hamstring injury and had recently scored in a Major League Soccer game. However, his efforts were not enough to lead Miami to victory against Monterrey.

Monterrey, known for having the highest payroll in the Mexican league, will now face the Columbus Crew in the semifinals, while America will take on Pachuca in the other semifinal match. Pachuca secured their spot in the semis by defeating Costa Rican club Herediano 2-1.

Monterrey is aiming to reach their first final since 2021 when they clinched their fifth CONCACAF title. Inter Miami ended the match with 10 men after Jordi Alba received a red card in the 78th minute.
