March 04--Despite speculation that Monterey Park might make history with an all-Asian American City Council, unofficial results from Tuesday's election show that voters in that San Gabriel Valley city appear to have ended up with four Chinese American councilmembers and one Latina, the same demographic mix the city has had for years.
Mitchell Ing, Teresa Real-Sebastian and Stephen Lam are leading a closely watched Monterey Park City Council race.
Unofficial results posted Tuesday night showed Ing, an incumbent, garnering 25.5% of the vote, followed by incumbent Real-Sebastian with 23.7% percent and newcomer Lam with 21% of the vote.
The top vote-getters will win one of three open council seats. Real-Sebastian's possible victory means that Monterey Park will not end up with an all-Chinese American City Council or all-male City Council.
Delario Robinson, an African American, had just 5.4% of the vote as of Tuesday night. Incumbent Anthony Wong was considered a front-runner because he had gathered more money and endorsements than any other candidate, but he was the fourth-highest vote-getter at 19.6%.
Approximately 500 provisional and mail-in ballots are still being tallied, and the official election results will be announced next week.
