Montenegro racism towards England players: Ian Wright accuses Uefa of not doing enough to eradicate problem

Ian Wright believes Uefa are not doing enough to combat racism after England duo Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose were abused in Montenegro.

Sterling made a gesture with his ears towards the Montenegro fans after scoring in the Three Lions' 5-1 win and there were alleged monkey chants aimed at Rose towards the end.

Wright, working as a pundit for ITV, does not think the governing body hand out sufficient punishments to countries whose supporters abuse black players.

"You have got to protect your players, they will probably go to Uefa and they will fine them a pittance amount as a deterrent," Wright said.

"Nothing will happen and we will probably get the same thing here at some stage again or somewhere else in Europe because they don't do enough to stop it."

Southgate 'saddened' by racist abuse aimed at England players

Fellow former England international Joe Cole added: "It is a shame that we come to places like this and have to talk about it, but we need to shine a light on it as a nation and take a lead with it.

"It is bang out of order, the lads shouldn't have to deal with it and it is just not on."
