Montemurro praises Arsenal's new centurion Mead

Beth Mead marked 100 games for Arsenal in their 3-0 win over Birmingham City, and coach Joe Montemurro was delighted for his young striker.

"It's great that we're getting players who are of that age really maturing," he said of the 25-year-old. "Beth has three or four weapons - she's very, very good at cutting inside, she's very, very good at exploiting spaces behind. I think the finishing and her deadball scenarios are very, very good so she's got three or four ways of breaking blocks and breaking lines.

"I think she's a very, very good component for our team."

He also had compliments for Caitlin Foord, who scored the first goal of the game with a lofted header past Hannah Hampton from a Katie McCabe cross.

"She's forceful with the ball," he said. "It's a different type of wide player, a different type of attacker as opposed to Beth Mead or Jordan [Nobbs].

"We're very lucky to have her and she is a great player."

He was also impressed by the stout defence of Carla Ward's Birmingham City, who had roughly a quarter of the possession in the first half but made it to the break goalless.

"They are very well organised in their back third, they defend very, very deep there,"he said. "We had to find a way and I think once it broke open and it was always going to be a little bit more smooth sailing from there - but all credit to them."
