Montae Nicholson, Redskins defense ready to take the next step

It is hard not to be impressed with the Washington Redskins defense coming out of the Week 2 preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Redskins’ first-team defense bullied the Bengals in the opening frame, with Montae Nicholson’s pick-six the highlight.

For Josh Norman, it was a sign of things to come thanks to elite play from the guys up front such as Jonathan Allen.

“When you get them bulls up there running like they’re doing, it’s going to be very chaotic once they get to the football,” Norman said, according to Redskins.com’s Kyle Stackpole. “They were licking their chops, ears pinned back and were ready to show today.”

The Bengals didn’t get on the board in the first quarter at all, with the Redskins defense even navigating some questionable calls by officials in the process.

Next up? Trying to get after it even more in Week 3 against Atlanta.

“Turn up the heat. More pressure on the quarterback and more pressure on the receivers, more turnovers,” Nicholson said.

It was clear before the preseason even started that the defense would have to carry the load while the offense figured out the problems under center and along the line.

But with Nicholson starting to emerge as the answer next to Landon Collins, it doesn’t seem like they’ll have many problems rising to the occasion.
