'Monstrous' spider the size of coffee cup leaves Scots landscapers frozen in fear

A Scots landscaper and his colleague got a big fright after a giant spider scuttled out from underneath garden decking.

Jamie McPhee and Gregor Sleith were working on a garden in Menstrie, Clackmannanshire when they spotted a trio of spiders crawling along the woodwork.

The pair, who work for Elite Paving and Landscape Design, were frozen in fear as one spider had grown to be the size of a hand.

Taking a video of the creature, believed to be a colonial spider, the workers carefully moved out of it's road to continue on with their job.

Colonial spiders are native to the UK and are typically smaller in size than the one the pair encountered.

Jamie, 39, told the Record: "We were doing up a garden in Menstrie and we pulled some of the decking out and all of a sudden Gregor clocked it from the digger and said 'Jesus Christ'.

"I was swearing as well and saying 'look at the size of that man'.

"There were two or three of them but this one was monstrous- I've never seen one so big.

"If it was on its feet it was probably about the size of a McDonald's coffee cup.

"I think it's called a colonial spider and they're the biggest ones you get here.

"Gregor is terrified of them so I went and picked it up with a stick to move it.

"We do see quite a lot of them, but this one was some size.

"They're fairly common but you usually find them inside, it's not something that will kill you.
