There’s low, then there’s scum, and then there’s ICE. Across the United States, vans full of masked men are snatching people from the street, detaining them without representation, and then tossing them into hellish nightmare prisons.
Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem have set a fixed target of 3,000 arrests per day for ICE agents across the country. This means each agent must scoop up as many people as they can, with cash bonuses paid out to those who hit their targets. This incentivizes cruelty. After all, what’s one more terrified and screaming person with brown skin shoved in the back of your van versus a couple of hundo for beer money?
Enter Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz, who had just turned 18 and was looking forward to starting his senior year at Reseda Charter High School in Southern California. He was walking the family dog in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles when a vanful of masked men screeched to a halt in front of him.
The ICE goons were in good spirits as they handcuffed and restrained the high-schooler, explaining that he was worth a $2,500 cash bonus to them and “thanks to him, they get to drink this weekend”. The student was then shoved into a van, leaving ICE alone with his dog.
A normal, kind person would have ensured that the dog was returned to the family, or at the bare minimum, be placed in a secure location for someone to collect. And, at first, they did tie the dog to a tree. Still cruel, but at least it keeps the pet from running away.
Then, doubtless realizing they had an opportunity for cruelty they were passing up, the agents then cut the dog’s collar off and set him loose in traffic. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that they took bets on how long it’d take him to be hit by a car. Then again, they are working for noted dog butcher Kristi Noem, so maybe this is standard procedure?

Guerrero-Cruz’s family, friends, school, and community have rallied behind him. His teacher, Liz Becerra, visited him at the processing center where he’s being held in a cramped cell with over two dozen men, and said: “He wants to graduate. He’s made it this far based on his will and on his dream, and that’s being taken away from him. He’s in detention; he should be in a classroom with us.”
Some day, the moral degenerates of ICE will face a reckoning for their current actions and, once again, “I was just following orders” isn’t a defense.
