Monster weather storm to dump foot of snow on Scotland over weekend

A monster storm from Spain could dump up to a foot of snow this weekend, weather forecasters said last night.

Blizzards are forecast for the Highlands and southern Scotland, where motorists who venture out have been told they could end up being stranded.

Heavy rain associated with Storm Jorge will cross the UK from tomorrow, turning to snow as it meets colder air over Scotland.

Heavy snow will affect a large area north of the Central Belt, where the Met Office said blizzards could dump up to 12in of snow.

Meanwhile winds of 65-70mph are set to sweep south-west Scotland and the Borders.
