Monsoon store in Newcastle's Eldon Square closes down after tough period for high street

The Monsoon store inside Eldon Square has closed down this week, the Newcastle shopping centre has confirmed.

The popular womenswear retailer took the decision to stop trading in the city in 2022 after a difficult two years for the high street.

Staff could be seen packing up the store, situated opposite the Apple shop on St.Andrew's Way, while sale shoppers browsed the rails on Tuesday, January 4.

Eldon Square confirmed that the store will be closing on January 5, however, a new Accessorize store has opened in the Douglas Way section of the shopping centre.

Situated opposite Lakeland, the new Accessorize store opened on Sunday, January 2 as a standalone shop.

An Eldon Square spokesman said: “Monsoon have taken the decision to stop trading as a dual-format Monsoon/Accessorize store and have now opened a new Accessorize standalone store opposite Lakeland which opened on Sunday, January 2.”

Monsoon has been a well-known and respected British high street chain for decades after being founded in 1973 by Peter Simon.

But in recent years it has faced financial challenges and closed dozens of stores despite Monsoon’s founder Peter Simon buying the business out of administration in 2020.

It comes after a tough period of trading for the whole of the high street which has been hit hard by lockdown closures during the pandemic.

Its devastating impact saw brands like Debenhams, Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Burton disappear from Eldon Square.

Monsoon declined to comment on the Eldon Square store closure.
