PANAJI: With the southwest monsoon already setting over Kerala, three days ahead of the normal date of June 1 the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared the official onset of monsoon this season as of yesterday, May 29. However monsoon conditions are unlikely to set over Goa over the next three to four days, the IMD said.
The department’s observations reveal that conditions are favourable for a further advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of the central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu as well as some parts of Karnataka over the next three to four days. Conditions are also favourable for the advance of the monsoon over some more parts of the south and central Bay of Bengal, some parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal and north-eastern states.
“As per the latest update monsoon conditions are less likely to set over Goa in the next three to four days. In the coming days we will get updates and clarity on the possibility of further progress of monsoon,” IMD scientist, Rahul M said.
In the next three to four days the monsoon is likely to progress only up to some parts of Karnataka which fall to the south of Goa.
“We are monitoring the conditions. However there is chance of a slight increase in spatial distributions of rainfall over Goa by around June 1-2. In the coming 48 hours we may get more clarity and update on monsoon’s advance further north,” Rahul said.
