Monsoon likely to hit North Bengal in 2-3 days: Met

KOLKATA: The southwest monsoon is likely to enter North Bengal within the next two to three days, about a week ahead of its arrival in 2021.

Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC)-Kolkata is keeping tabs on the advancement of monsoon in the northern parts of the state. Once the monsoon reach North Bengal, weather scientists will be in a better position to predict its arrival in Kolkata and rest of the southern parts of Bengal.

“Conditions are favourable for monsoon’s onset over North Bengal by June 3. We expect heavy to very heavy rain to hit large parts of North Bengal starting from Thursday,” said GK Das, director (weather) at RMC-Kolkata.

Strong south westerly wind have already started breezing into North Bengal along with large cloud mass formation. Southwest monsoon in Bengal first hits northern parts of the state before it curbs and covers south Bengal.

Last year, the monsoon arrived in North Bengal on June 10, one day ahead of its onset in Kolkata and some other parts of south Bengal.

“It had taken between one to four days for the monsoon’s arrival in Kolkata after its arrival in North Bengal. Let it first reach North Bengal before we predict its date of arrival in Kolkata,” said Das.
