The Southwest monsoon has covered the entire country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The normal date by which the monsoon is expected to do this is July 8. However, with the unusually prolonged advance into northwest India, there were concerns that it might be delayed.
The normal date for the monsoon's arrival over Delhi is June 27. But the monsoon officially set in here only on Tuesday.
According to the IMD weather bulletin, the Southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of the country, including Delhi, remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
“The continued prevalence of moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal in the lower levels for the last four days resulted in enhanced cloud cover and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall,” the statement noted.
Until Monday, the all-India rainfall deficit was nearly 8%. The pick up of the winds in the Bay of Bengal has improved rainfall across most of the country and narrowed the deficit to 6% as of Tuesday.
