Heavy monsoon rains continued to wreak havoc across China on Tuesday, with a landslide in the north-western province of Gansu leaving 16 people buried, while severe storms and flooding claimed at least eight lives in central China.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the landslide struck Tanchang county in Gansu, trapping 33 people. Rescue teams have pulled 17 people to safety, while efforts are continuing to locate the remaining 16. State news agency Xinhua said local authorities were deploying all available resources to the rescue operation. The cause of the landslide has not yet been determined.
In central China's Hubei province, thunderstorms, strong winds and reported tornadoes swept through several cities, including Huangshi and Huanggang, killing at least eight people. One person remains missing.
State media reported that 275 people were injured in Huanggang's Huangzhou district, while 408 residents were evacuated as a precaution. Emergency teams remain on the ground carrying out rescue and relief operations.
The extreme weather comes as southern China continues to battle widespread flooding triggered by Tropical Storm Maysak. At least two people were killed in Guangxi province, where torrential rain forced the evacuation of around 48,000 people and affected more than 55,000 residents.
Floodwaters breached reservoir dams in parts of Guangxi, with CCTV footage showing muddy torrents rushing through collapsed concrete walls. Rivers overflowed in Fangchenggang, submerging homes and vehicles, while rescue workers used inflatable boats to reach stranded residents. Authorities said more than 1,000 rescuers, supported by boats, vehicles and drones, had been deployed to the affected areas.
