Monmouth hit by flooding as River Wye bursts its banks following heavy rainfall from Storm Dennis

People have been evacuated from their homes in Monmouth as river levels continue to rise on the River Wye in the aftermath of Storm Dennis.

Water levels on the River Wye reached 7.14m at 7.45am on Tuesday and levels were expected to continue to rise.

The river has overflowed and the A40 between Monmouth and Ross on Wye is flooded as a result. The road is closed from the Monmouth traffic lights and the Wye Bridge is also closed. People in Monmouth have since been told to limit the amount of water they use with supplies dwindling after a treatment facility was flooded.

Photos of the A40 northbound at Monmouth show the road is deserted but no flooding can be seen. Traffic is being diverted around the road causing congestion on nearby routes.

Two severe flood warnings are in place for the River Wye in Monmouth in both defended areas and undefended areas.

Monmouthshire County Council evacuated homes near the river on Monday evening as a result of the severe flood warning and residents spent the night in the Shire Hall in the centre of Monmouth.

The council released a statement which said: "Residents living on the River Wye and on nearby roads have been evacuated.

"Monmouthsire County Council has closed the Wye Bridge in the centre of the town and are warning pedestrians and motorists to keep away from the area."
