Monklands' sporting stars honoured at annual North Lanarkshire awards bash

Sporting stars from across Monklands were honoured for their achievements at the annual North Lanarkshire sports awards ceremony.

ACES Netball Club was named club of the year, while ACES representative Lorna Colquhoun was named young person’s coach of the year.

Football coach Martin Holmes of Coatbridge club Dunbeth FC was named volunteer of the year; Julie Anne Taylor of Active Schools earned the young volunteer title; and Majella Kerr of Airdrie-based Hope for Autism took the community coach award.

St Ambrose High PE teacher Anton Heffron was named secondary school sport champion, and St Augustine’s in Coatbridge was named primary school of the year.

They received their awards at a ceremony held at the Alona Hotel in Strathclyde Park – after more than 160 nominations were received for the 12 hotly-contested award categories.

Depute council leader Paul Kelly congratulated the winners, saying: “We’re extremely grateful for their dedication, hard work and tireless enthusiasm to develop sport in North Lanarkshire.

“These awards recognise the contribution of local sports clubs, coaches, teachers and volunteers who have made a significant impact to the delivery of sport across the area.”

He added: “The number and quality of nominations was outstanding, and I congratulate all the nominees for making it on to the shortlist in their respective categories.”

The awards were arranged by North Lanarkshire’s active schools team, and the presentation ceremony was sponsored by Tillicoultry Quarries, Clubsport NL, Muller Milk and Ingredients, Tunnock’s, Inspiration 4 Schools, S Collins & Son and North Lanarkshire Council.

Councillor Kelly said: “I’d like to thank the active schools team for the work they’ve done throughout the year, supporting a broad range of inclusive sport and physical activity opportunities in our schools, and a wide range of organisations in our communities.”
