Monklands residents warned about scammers as fake roofers target homes

Council chiefs are warning Monklands householders to be on the lookout for potential scammers.

An alert has gone out about roofing companies calling at people’s doors claiming to be able to access grant funding from North Lanarkshire Council to replace the roofs of their homes.

Cases have been reported to the Trading Standards team, where a business has been telling householders they are working on behalf of the council and can secure government funding for roofing works.

Advice from the council includes making background checks on the company involved.

People are asked to make sure they get their right to cancel in writing; you should be given a 14-day cooling-off period unless you sign away this right.

Check with the council’s private sector team on 01698 274179 to see if any works suggested might be grant eligible before signing anything with a company.
