Monklands falls silent to honour the fallen at Remembrance Sunday ceremony

Memories and stories were shared and poignant and heartfelt tributes made on a crisp autumnal morning on Sunday as Monklands residents came together to remember those who gave their lives for their country.

Airdrie war memorial hosted the area’s main service and parade, with this year’s event taking on extra importance and emotion after 2020’s ceremony was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Hundreds of people turned out at the Monkscourt Avenue memorial and you could’ve heard a pin drop during the perfectly-observed two-minute silence.

Guests and dignitaries included Monklands politicians Anum Qaisar-Javed, Neil Gray, Fulton MacGregor and Richard Leonard, the brave ex-servicemen and women who served the war effort and military and community organisations.

Wreaths were laid by the Lord Lieutenant and his deputes on behalf of the Queen and the crowd joined in with stirring renditions of the national anthem.

Further acts of remembrance to honour the fallen saw wreaths laid at memorials including the cenotaph in Coatbridge and in communities across Monklands.

A wreath-laying ceremony also take place at the war memorial outside the authority’s Civic Centre headquarters to mark Armistice Day last week.
