The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
FPI Project: Rich In Paradise
The other day I realised what the distorted voice said at the beginning: “Hey, you – don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy.” Er… So I made an edit that doesn’t have that weird bit in, although I guess it’s a good message to the kids.
The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Double 99: RIP Groove
This is a real panic card. If nothing else is working, this usually does, but I try not to panic.
The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Melé: Ambience
Sometimes all you need is good drums and a big vocal. Everyone is loving this at the moment, from Annie Mac to Jackmaster. Definitely the tune of Lost & Found festival.
The track I think been unfairly slept on this year
Fono: Real Joy
I actually wasn’t too sure about this tune when I first heard it. Then I heard it on a big soundsystem in a warehouse and was like: “All right, yeah, I get it now!” Builds up to a 4/4 stomper real quick.
The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Marvin Gaye: Got To Give It Up
I wouldn’t play this in a normal set but I did at Radio 1’s Christmas party. If I’m playing some sort of special occasion the genres get pretty vast!
The best track by my favourite new artist
Kalyde: The Layout
A young producer who has found his stride in techno with a proper groove.
The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
Bill Withers: Lovely Day
I don’t have a copy of it, because whenever it springs up on me it always seems to be perfectly fitting to where I am and what I’m doing in that moment in time.
The track I wish I’d never played
Mariah Carey: Emotions
It actually went down pretty well but I knew once I had played it, it was probably time to take myself to bed.
The track that got me out of bed this morning
Honne: Coastal Love
A duo from London who make quite dreamy, synth-heavy soul.
The ideal festival track
Candi Staton: You Got The Love
I don’t care if you’re a vinyl chin-scratcher who only listens to white noise on a gramophone; a few ciders in with the sun out, this tune comes on, you’re into it.
The track I’d play at my funeral
Congo Natty: Junglist
Everyone better have a party!
Monki plays Fabric, EC1, Friday 1 May
