Scotland has recorded its first case of monkeypox, according to public health authorities.
Contract tracing is underway as officials try and work out the source of the infection in the country.
Dr Nick Phin from Public Health Scotland insisted the “the overall risk to the general public is low” after the first confirmed case was revealed on Monday morning.
It comes as the UK braces for its total number of official cases - which stood at 20 as of Sunday - to go up. This is expected to be announced later today.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation has confirmed 92 confirmed cases of monkeypox around the world - including Europe and the US - and another 28 suspected infections. This tally does not include cases in Israel, Switzerland and Austria which were announced later.
Monkeypox - which belongs to the same virus family as smallpox but gives milder symptoms - is rarely identified outside of Africa.
