Monitor Mateo Kovacic, centre-back woes and work with Reece James - Frank Lampard's to do list

Chelsea were unable to pick up their second win of the Premier League campaign at the weekend and go into the international break with just five points out of four games.

It's been a mixed start to the 2019/20 season for the Blues, and the last-minute equaliser against Sheffield United certainly killed the mood on what could have been a promising beginning.

But now there is a chance for the Blues to regroup and refresh, with some of their players staying behind and others heading off to play for their countries.

For Frank Lampard, it will give him the chance to prepare for a very busy period, which includes the start of the Carabao Cup and Champions League campaigns.

So what is going to be on Lampard's to do list over the next ten days or so? Football.london takes a look right here.

Time to rest up

That is going to be the first key for Lampard as they go into the international break and look to get ready for a busy schedule.

Chelsea, of course, have several players who have linked up with their international sides over the next couple of weeks, but there are also many who are not involved in matches.

While they will no doubt be heading off on holiday and recuperate before getting back to work, it will also keep Lampard time to have some of his players back to some full fitness.

The Chelsea boss has been unlucky that some key players have been injured in his early reign, and this is a good chance for them to get back to the right fitness.

Find the right centre-back partnership

Lampard insisted that he wasn't concerned about the centre-back position, however the fact that the Blues have not kept a clean sheet is a massive concern.

"No I wouldn’t say I was worried about it. I am trying to work all over the team to get the right combinations," Lampard said on Saturday. "Rudiger is fit after the international break, gives me another choice. We can isolate goals and talk about centre-backs or whatever, it’s not, it’s the team.

"When we score goals, sometimes it’s because of the centre-back playing the ball quickly. I am not relating the centre-back issue. I trust the four centre-backs I have completely, we are just in a moment where obviously we need to stop conceding goals."

With Antonio Rudiger expected back for the Wolverhampton Wanderers clash, you would expect him to come back into the starting XI.

So between Fikayo Tomori, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, Lampard needs to find the right combination this week.

Monitor Mateo Kovacic

There has been another issue popped up in the past few days after an ankle injury for Mateo Kovacic that he picked up against Sheffield United.

The 25-year-old has had a decent start to the 2019/20 campaign after signing a permanent deal with the Blues in the summer.

With the injury to N'Golo Kante, Kovacic has been a key member of the midfield next to Jorginho and Ross Barkley, and it would be a big blow.

It is early days to see what the extent of what his ankle injury is, but it is something that Lampard is going to be monitoring strongly over the course of the week.

Work with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James

Chelsea fielded their youngest team in Premier League history at the weekend, and it could get even younger with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James set to come back into the fold.

Both Chelsea academy products have been injured for the start of the campaign, but have been working hard to get back to full fitness.

Hudson-Odoi has been training with the first team, while James has also been doing extra work on his own to get back and ready to play.

James is expected to fight Cesar Azpilicueta hard for the starting right-back role, while Hudson-Odoi is likely to push for a place on the wings as well.

The international break could give Lampard the chance to discover if both are ready to get into his team from the very beginning.
