Monica Lennon MSP appointed energy spokesperson in Labour reshuffle

Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon has been appointed as spokesperson for net zero, energy and transport in a reshuffle of Scottish Labour's top team.

The new role will focus on tackling climate change, reducing emissions and Scotland’s transport sector.

Scotland will be host to COP26, a global conference to tackle climate change, at the end of 2021 and the task of tackling climate change is hugely significant.

As a former environmental planner, Lennon has strong environmental credentials and has consistently campaigned against the proposed incinerator at Whitehill in Hamilton and Overwood Farm in Stonehouse due to concerns over emissions and harm to human health.

She has been an advocate for the retention of local bus services like the X1 between Hillhouse and Glasgow and the 31 serving Stewartfield in East Kilbride which was axed by First Bus, as well as the need to invest in green alternatives to reduce emissions.

The First X1 served Hamilton and Strathaven (EKN)

Ms Lennon is also the species champion for Oak trees and has worked with the park rangers at Chatelherault Country Park to nominate the Cadzow Oak for an award as well as planting new trees.

The MSP said: “I’m so excited to be leading on net zero, energy and transport for Scottish Labour in Parliament.

“I am looking forward to working with communities and organisations around Scotland on the urgent actions needs to protect people and the planet.

“If local constituents have issues they would like to raise with me, I would urge you to get in touch.”
