Monica Lennon congratulates Anas Sarwar after he's named Scottish Labour leader

Monica Lennon has congratulated Anas Sarwar on beating her for Scottish Labour Leader.

The Central Scotland MSP and leadership hopeful took to social media praising Sarwar for winning the top job after a tightly run contest.

It comes after the Scottish Labour leadership contest finally drew to a close, with Sarwar announced as the victor this morning.

Anas Sarwar is now the Scottish Labour leader (PA)

Sarwar scooped the win following focused attempts to reunite the party while trying to resist any move towards another independence referendum.

It comes after Leonard quit in January, days after saying he was determined to fight for every vote in the election this May.

Glasgow MSP Anas Sarwar then quickly threw his hat into the ring, followed by Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon.

Now Lennon has welcomed the new leader of the party and is 'proud' of being part of the race.

Monica tweeted: "Congratulations to @AnasSarwar, our new leader.

"Proud to have been part of this positive leadership debate.

"Huge thanks to my volunteer team @scottishlabour party staff and the members and affiliates who participated.

"Let’s get out there as a united team. #BothVotesLabour '"

In a speech to members after the announcement, he thanked Ms Lennon for a campaign that "has shown the best of our party, not the worst of our politics".

Speaking directly to voters, he added: "I know Labour has a lot of work to do to win back your trust, because if we're brutally honest, you haven't had the Scottish Labour Party you deserve.

"Rising injustice, inequality and division, I'm sorry we haven't been good enough and I will work day and night to change that so we can build a country we all need."
