MoneySavingExpert Martin Lewis urges struggling workers to apply for key support

Martin Lewis has been answering questions non-stop over the past couple of weeks as the coronavirus outbreak continues.

The MoneySavingExpert was on The Emma Barnett Show today discussing the financial impact of the pandemic.

Many listeners got in touch regarding furlough pay, as the coronavirus job retention scheme went live.

Employers claim for 67,000 jobs in the first 30 minutes of launch, according to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

However, Martin said if struggling workers were to do one thing only, it should be to apply for Universal Credit.

Jasmine got in touch with Martin through the BBC radio show saying she was having issues with the new scheme.

She explained that having left a previous job on March 8, she was supposed to start a new role on April 15, but the company rescinded the job.

Despite being in the latest cut off date for the furlough scheme, her former company then went into administration and was unable to help her process a claim.

Martin said unfortunately for Jasmine due to the company going into administration, she could not be part of the furlough and rehire scheme.

The MoneySavingExpert said furlough is a discretionary choice by the employer even if you fit into all the categories to be furloughed, they don't have to furlough you.

Martin then advised Jasmine and others in a similar situation to do one thing and apply for Universal Credit.

He said: "I think you and everybody else who is falling into holes, apply for Universal Credit.

"There is nothing stopping you applying for Universal Credit and you later find out you're being furloughed, there is no problem in doing both, you are not going to get in trouble."
