MoneySavingExpert explain small job title change that could save you £100 on car insurance

Drivers can save up to £100 on their car insurance by legitimately tweaking their job title, Martin Lewis' MoneySavingExpert website claims.

Your job title is one of the details that car insurance providers will use to calculate the cost of your premium.

Usually drivers pick the first job title from a list of pre-set careers that best described their occupation.

However, choosing another job title, that still describes what you do, could give you a cheaper quote, The Mirror reports.

For example, MoneySavingExpert heard from one person who said they saved £100 by saying they worked in “software” instead of “computer games”.

Lying about your job title could risk you being accused of fraud and having your insurance invalidated.

But if you can legitimately use another description for your job, and it works out cheaper, it could save you money in the long run.

MSE writers said: "You can't claim to be a barrister if you're a barista (or vice versa) but clever savings are possible with small tweaks.

"Our fun job picker tool can help and explains what's legit and what's not."

How do I check if I can make a saving?

MoneySavingExpert has a “job picker” tool where you can check various roles to see which comes out cheaper.

It works by entering the amount you usually pay yearly for your car insurance, followed by your job title.

The website will then bring up a list of job titles that could apply to your sector, along with a typical amount that someone could pay.

If you’re unsure, speak to your car insurer - particularly if you have two jobs, as some companies will want you to choose the occupation that takes up most of your time.

There are plenty of other ways to lower your car insurance too.

For example, Money Saving Expert has also explained how the cheapest time to buy your insurance is 23 days before it is due.
