Money savvy mum turns £55 IKEA unit into bunk bed with 'lots of storage' for child

A mum was praised online after she managed to turn an ordinary £55 IKEA shelving unit into a bunk bed for her daughter - with a tonne of storage space.

The savvy mum shared her creation on Facebook in the DIY on a budget official page to give others some inspiration for their home improvement projects.

In her post, the mum called Simone wrote: "IKEA Kallax bed with Argos shorty mattress."

Along with the post were a range of photos which featured how she managed to transform the rectangular IKEA unit, now on the website for £55.25, into a raised bed with a lot of storage underneath.

Simone began by getting the KALLAX shelving unit into her daughter's room on its side. The unit was 77x147cm so it fit just right into the space she had planned for it.

The next step was to build the wooden frame for the mattress which Simone constructed with three beams down the middle to hold it up.

Storage boxes were added to the shelving unit at the bottom of the bed so her sister could store her belongings.

She then covered the beams with a large wooden sheet. To avoid any mould getting in place, some breather holes were added for proper ventilation.

A white piece of wood was added to the front of the shelving unit to avoid the mattress rolling off the top.

Simone covered the gaps either side of the unit before adding pillows, mattress and her daughter's mattress to make the room feel more comfortable.

She decorated the space with some fairy lights, and some small white shelves to hold a lamp, books and a faux plant.

Other users who saw the hack on Facebook loved her crafty idea, with her post gaining more than 1,000 likes and over 260 comments.

One person wrote: "Brilliant that."

Another tagged her friend and added: "How amazing is this?"

"Great use of the space! Superb," a third penned.
