Sometimes a sofa needs to be updated, maybe you like following trends or sometimes you have to buy a new one because a pet destroys the arm.
Whatever the reason, the cost of furniture can hit the thousands pretty quickly and be a real cause for concern for those living on a budget.
Thankfully shoppers in the online savings community latestdeals.com have come up with several ways to get affordable and sometimes even free furniture.
Experts have also weighed in on the conversation and say that picking the right fabric could mean the sofa last longer and is, therefore, better value.

In a money-saving Facebook group, one shopper said: "My cats have totally destroyed my sofa so it's time for a new one...Any tips on buying furniture without breaking the bank"
Up first was a tip on how to keep cats from scratching furniture: "There is a clear double-sided plastic you can put on furniture where cats scratch to stop them. You can't see it and cats don't like the sticky on their paws"
Charity shops
Charity shops are not just for second-hand clothes and brick-a-brack according to these shoppers who were able to make huge savings.
One said: "Mine was from a British heart foundation shop nearly 4 years ago, going to replace soon with another second-hand one likely"
Another added: "We got a nearly new leather suite from a charity shop 3 seater and two chairs under £200 (it came from a holiday let)"
Social media
Buying items on Facebook marketplace is a popular tip with some people even managing to get free items.
"Facebook marketplace has some great sofas that look like new. I believe you should only buy what you can afford, never set things on as you don't know what the future holds", says one savvy shopper.
Another person was able to get a free sofa by looking on social media: "Look on Facebook Marketplace I got a 3 seater leather sofa with single chair for free last year just had to pay for someone to pick it up and remove my old one!"
Online stores
Kelly Henderson from brokeinlondon.com said that Ikea is one of the first stores to pop into anyone head when they need affordable furniture but there are other options.
Bedsos, TradeSecret, Get Furnished and Ebay are her top four recommendations and one shopper agrees.
They said: "You can get some really decent ones for half the price if you search for ex-display or returns on eBay. Stuff like Arlo and Jacob and Made."
Another used a different bargain site to get a great deal: "Got mine from shpock someone bought it 10 months before.
"Decided to move far away n rent fully furnished. So I got a 3 n 2 seater sofas for £200 that had cost over £1000 I've had then over 3 years n still like new"
Buy styles that last
One of the first things you consider when buying furniture that you want to get the best value for is if it will last a long time.
One shopper said: "Buy distressed leather, scratches blend in, mine is 20 years old and so comfy, I could replace it but I refuse to, nothing is anywhere near as comfy"
The Yorkshire Fabric Shop said that synthetic microfibre, leather and cotton are the most durable fabrics and when buying woven materials the more tightly woven the material, the more long-lasting the fabric.
