Money Saving Expert warns of holiday 'rip off' we all fall for

The Money Saving Expert website, set up by Martin Lewis, is warning holidaymakers about a 'rip-off' we all fall for.

With strict rules around liquid and hand luggage at airports , many opt to buy 'mini versions of their usual toiletries.

But research carried out for the money advice site has shown you could end up paying seven times more for the smaller bottles.

What should you do if you miss your flight?

For example, an Original Source lemon & tea tree shower gel costs £1.50 at Boots for 50ml a mini version, meaning you are paying £3 per 100ml, while the full-size bottle is £1 at Boots for 250ml, making it 40p per 100ml.

So you would even up paying seven times more for the same amount of shower gel.

This is also the case with Ambre Solaire sensitive sun cream, normally priced at £7 for 200ml at Boots, making it £3.50 for 100ml.

But if you by the mini bottle for your hand luggage, it will cost £3 for 5ml at Boots - £6 per 100ml.

You can read the full results and research here.

So how can you keep costs down?

Rhiannon Moorhouse at the Money Saving Expert recommends purchasing cheap, refillable and reusable bottles and decanting your normal shampoos and shower gels into them.

Or, obviously, if you have a baggage allowance for the hold, put all your normal toiletries in there.
