Money Saving Expert's urgent warning to anyone who missed tax credits deadline

People who missed the tax credits deadline may be able to get them back, but you'll have to be quick about it.

Those who have had their tax credits taken away might be able to have them reinstated according to Martin Lewis' Money Saving expert team.

The warning was published in this week's Money Saving Expert newsletter, with people told to act urgently.

Tax credits are benefit payments to support people with children or who are in work but on low incomes.

If you get the severe disability premium, or you got it in the past month and remain eligible, you can still make a new child tax credit claim.

But you can no longer make a new working tax credits claim.

Martin's team said: "Those who needed to respond to HM Revenue & Customs by 31 July to renew their tax credits but missed the deadline have a chance to continue receiving them – but you'll need to act fast.

"Letters have been sent out to all those who missed the deadline. These letters are dated, and if you get in touch with HMRC within 30 days of the date on your letter, your tax credits claim might be restored.

"If your claim is reinstated, any payments due to you will be made.

"There are two ways to get in touch with HMRC about reinstatement. You can either telephone HMRC on 0345 300 3900 (make sure you've got your letter to hand), or write to it. More details, including how to write to HMRC, can be found on the Gov.uk website."
