Money Saving Expert’s tip to reclaim lost Tesco Clubcard vouchers or extend current ones

Tesco Clubcard scheme is one of the most generous programmes in our supermarkets, especially if used to its full potential. Vouchers, the value of which builds up every time you shop at Tesco, can be used to take money off your grocery shopping or even on days out and discounts in other stores.

You’ll bag one point for every £1 you spend and this includes in Tesco stores, online and with Tesco partners such as Esso. Once you collect enough points, they’ll be swapped for vouchers that can be redeemed for various rewards.

Each point is worth 1p to spend in Tesco, so 500 points equal a £5 voucher. However, for those who amass many points, you can trade them for partner rewards up to three times the value, so that £5 Tesco voucher becomes a £15 rewards voucher.

When do Clubcard points expire?

Your points are automatically converted into vouchers at certain points throughout the year. You can keep saving these for up to two years, after which they expire.

However, Money Saving Expert says that is possible to reclaim lost vouchers, or even extend the ones you currently have.

How to reclaim lost Tesco vouchers

If you have lost or forgot to use your Tesco vouchers, Money Saving Expert does say that “there is an easy way to claw back the last two years of unused vouchers”. Just follow these steps:

  • Log in online. Go to the Tesco Clubcard* site (you'll need to be registered for a Tesco.com account). You'll need your email address, password and Clubcard number to access your account.

  • Check for unspent vouchers. In your Clubcard account, click on 'my Clubcard account' and then 'vouchers' on the left-hand side and you should see a table listing the vouchers you still have to spend.

  • Instantly print vouchers or use the codes online. If you want to spend vouchers online, you simply need to use the code listed, eg, beginning "A6TCD". To spend in-store, print vouchers yourself to use instantly.

Money Saving Expert’s trick to extending Clubcard vouchers

The bargain hunters explain that it is possible to extend the expiry date on vouchers past their initial two years, making it the perfect little trick if you’re saving for a big purchase. Here’s what they recommend:

  • Make a small purchase on the Tesco Clubcard site (not in-store or on other Tesco websites) and the remaining balance is credited back to your Clubcard account as points.

  • They'll then be reissued as new vouchers (with an expiry date of up to two years in the future) when you next get a batch. So if you spend 50p on a £10 voucher, you'll get £9.50 as new vouchers.

  • There's no minimum spend, but the aim is to shell out as little as possible. A good option might be a 50p restaurant voucher* (worth £1.50 at your chosen restaurant).

The site’s authors add: “Bear in mind you'll need to do this for each individual voucher though, so weigh up if it's actually worth it for smaller denominations. For example, if you have a £10 voucher it's probably worth it – if you've got a handful of £1 vouchers, maybe less so.”
