Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis urges 1,000s are eligible to claim student loan refund

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has revealed thousands of people could be eligible for a refund on their student loan.

And the personal finance guru urged people to take the cash while they can, even if it means it'll theoretically increase debt.

Speaking on his ITV programme, the Martin Lewis Money Show, he said there are a number of reasons former students may have overpaid.

These include payments beginning prior to the April after the completion of study and mis-calculated pay.

People who earn varying amounts from month-to-month also may have repaid student loans when they didn't need to, as the salary threshold is applied to the whole year.

He said: "You only repay your loan if people earn over a threshold in a year. For people in England and Wales that's currently £27,000.

"But some go over it on a monthly in come, sort-of in proportion, and they get charged.

"But if you earn less than the threshold in a year you can reclaim that too.

"To do this just call the Student Loans Company."

Lewis said claiming the money back is easier if you have pay slips or a payroll number to hand, but not a problem if you don't.

For those concerned about increasing their debt, he added: "I know some of you will be going: 'But surely this is bad if you want to pay off your debts, you don't want to take the money out.'

"But remember, on the English and Welsh system, it's predicted only 17 per cent of university leavers will clear this in the 30 years before the debt wipes.

"So taking money back won't change what you pay in the future, it'll just put money in your pocket now."
