Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis' top tips to cut the price of petrol and diesel

March was a rough month for petrol users as the average price of petrol rose for the second month in row.

A litre increased by 2p in March to 122.58p, data from RAC Fuel Watch shows.

This means filling a 55-litre family car with unleaded now costs £67.22.

The average price of diesel also increased but only 0.70p to 130.67p taking a fill-up to £71.87.

However, Martin Lewis has revealed on Money Saving Expert four of his best tips to cut the price of fuel.

Fill up at least 50 miles before your tank runs out

According to Martin, if you make this a habit you'll have enough time to find a cheaper petrol station.

Whereas, if you leave it to the last minute you're more likely to fill up at the next one you see, so you won't be focused on price.

Is 'better fuel' worth it?

The Money Saving Expert suggests only using 'better fuel' if your car can cope.

He revealed that petrol stations sell 'high performance' fuels, yet there's little or no performance difference for most non-performance cars.

Unless you have been specifically advise to or you have a sports car, there is no need to fill up with the super-fuels.

The myth of filling up at night

Some drivers may have been told that filling your tank up at night gets you more - however this is an urban myth.

Martin says the differences are minuscule – pennies at best.

The only reason you could get a tiny bit extra is because petrol pumps are calibrated by volume, so fill up at night when it's cold.

Listen for the clunk

It's common for people to continue filling their tank until it's full.

However, Martin advises against this, saying that filling up your tank to the top isn't great as it adds weight to the car.

But if you do like to run on a full tank, don't keep going after the petrol nozzle 'clunks'. If you do, you're overfilling.
