Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis says people can get a free £175 in cash just before Christmas

We could all do with a little extra cash ahead of Christmas - and it's even better if you can get it for free.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has shared a savvy trick to help you get your hands on £175.

All you have to do is switch bank accounts.

Now, for some, that might be a big move they may not want to commit to, but if you have been thinking about switching or you are not happy with your bank, now could be the time to do it.

As a reward for choosing them, some banks give away cash offers when you switch.

Martin Lewis recommends switching to HSBC if you want £175 in cash now but this offer ends on Monday, December 2.

NatWest is giving away £150 in cash and 2% back on your bills, while First Direct with give you £50.

Martin said: "The process is quick and easy since the seven-working-day Current Account Switch Service (CASS) began in September 2013.

"Just open a new account, then use the new bank's switching service and it'll close your old account and move your money, direct debits, standing orders etc across.

"It'll also move payments meant to go into your old account into the new one, for example your salary.

"If something goes wrong, the bots behind the scenes sort it, so for at least three years any money paid into the old account or wrongly earmarked to come out of that account is transferred to the new one.

"Also, if you're hit with any charges due to an error in the switch, this should be refunded by the new bank."
