Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis reveals simple way to save £1000s in new year

At the start of every new year, many of us make the resolution to have start saving money.

But it can be hard to give up your luxuries or even finding the time to change your financial habits.

However, Martin Lewis has revealed a number of simple ways to save thousands of pounds in one year alone.

The MoneySavingExpert has put a handy guide from how to track your spends to cutting your household bills.

Martin Lewis, founder of moneysavingexpert.com (Martin Lewis)

We've rounded up some of his best tips to help you start saving in 2020.

Food Shopping

Martin says one easy way to cut the cost is by avoiding premium brands.

That doesn't mean you'll be buying lower quality either.

As you move up the brand level costs increase, as do presentation and sometimes ingredients.

Often a manufacturers' brand and own brand may well be made in the same factory by the same people (though it's tough to prove with specific products).

Savings: £100-400 per year (and backdated reclaimed payout of £1,000s)

Childcare costs

There's £1,000s of hidden free cash for childcare. Whether it's tax-free childcare, or free summer holiday activities, the savings are huge.

According to  the Money Advice Service,  the average cost of sending a child under two to nursery in Britain is £122.46 per week, part-time, and £232.84 per week, full time.

One way to find out if you can be given a helping hand is by visiting  https://www.childcarechoices.gov.uk/  - an online tool which allows you to look through all the help on offer and, if you wish, fill in some details about yourself to determine which offer might be best for you.

Should you use a water meter?

If you've more or the same number of bedrooms in your house as people, you're probably better off with a water meter.

Cancel direct debits

Check your bank statement to see what direct debits you're still paying for.

Many waste £1,000s a year paying for things they don't need.

So whether it's mags, gyms, dating sites or pay-TV, get tough and cut them down.
