Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has warned British Gas customers to ignore messages asking them to lock in to a fixed rate.
The energy giant has been sending emails encouraging households to "switch in just one click" to a new fixed tariff, which could end up costing consumers hundreds more in their yearly bills.
Energy wholesale prices have skyrocketed, leaving Ofgem's price cap by far the cheapest option for all customers coming up to renewal and the current advice is to "do nothing" when your current deal ends.

Martin Lewis explained: "Because the price cap moves every six months, and is now based on a time lag, it is now the cheapest, meaningful tariff you can get. By sticking with the energy price cap, households with typical usage can expect to pay less than the current cheapest fix."
Switching to a fixed deal is currently over 60% more expensive than rolling onto the standard variable tariff.
The email that has been sent contains a link meaning that customers can switch as easily as a click of a button.
There were complaints to the money saving expert about the company's tactics as they didn't agree with it being so easy and they also accused British Gas of not fully informing them of the rates in the standard tariff.
If you have already accepted a switch onto a fixed tariff and it's been less than 14 days you still have time to cancel it.
You have two options when it comes to cancelling your tariff:
- Call the British Gas Energy helpline on 0330 100 0056.
- Alternatively, you can fill out the British Gas Tariff Cancellation Form and send it back to the energy firm using the email cooling-off@britishgas.co.uk.
