Money Saving Expert explains why your bank balance might look different

From December 18 your bank balance is set to look different if you have an overdraft.

Because of new rules and guidelines, banks will no longer be allowed to show overdrafts as 'available balance'.

So where as before if you had £100 and a £500 overdraft, it would normally show as you having £600 in available funds, but from December 18, it will only show £100 available funds.

If you have an agreed overdraft this will not change and you will still be able to use it, it will just be displayed differently.

You are likely to see another available balance alongside your actual balance which states "including your overdraft".

And when you go into your overdraft, it will display a minus balance.

Steve Nowottny, news and features editor at MoneySavingExpert.com , said: "This is a sensible change in the rules that will make it much clearer to customers that an overdraft is a debt, and it's good to see banks starting to give much clearer info to customers.

"Yet it's important you understand this change is happening.

"If you don't, you may understandably panic and think money is missing from your account, as we've seen in some cases this week.

"Banks have been working hard to alert customers, but they need to be as clear as possible about what's changing, why it's changing and when it's changing, so that those affected understand what to look out for and benefit from a very positive move."

Banks like Barclys, the Co-op, Monzo and Nationwide already do this, so those customers wont notice the difference.

HSBC, First Direct and M&S Bank made the change on Sunday, November 24.

The Money Saving Expert website states that the Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds, Metro Bank, Santander and TSB will make the change by December 18, but NatWest and RBS are yet to state when they will switch.
