Money saving challenges: From the 1p challenge to the £2,020 for 2020 challenge

Saving money can be tedious.

But as we plunge into the new decade - there's no better time to adopt smarter saving habbits.

Like every other year, thousands of Mancunians have made resolutions to clear debts, get onto the property ladder and put more towards paying off the mortgage.

Yet it's not always easy to stay on track with long-term financial goals - no matter how good our intentions are.

If you're a social media user, you might have spotted friends sharing money saving challenges.

These allow you to meet reachable daily, weekly or monthly saving goals that eventually mount up to huge sums of money.

In many cases, if you stick with a money saving challenge you could end up with more than £1000 by the end of the year.

There are several to try depending on how much you want to save.

The penny challenge could help you save approximately £670 and with others you could reach a whopping £2020 saved.

Here's our round up of the top money saving challenges circulating the internet.

Top tip: If you have enough money to start backwards - consider this so you don't have to save the larger sums of money in December - the most expensive time of the year.

The 1p challenge - save £667.95

Start with 1p on day one, add 2p on day two, 3p on day three, and so on.

Do this until you reach day 365 when you will add the final £3.65 taking you to your £667.95 total.

The 12-month challenge - save £780

Take your month as a number and multiply it by 10 to figure out how much you need to save.

For example save £10 in January, £20 in February and so on until you're saving £120 in December.

By the end you'll be just shy of £800.

The £20 challenge - save £1,040

Spending £20 a week on a takeaway and a bottle of wine on Friday is a casual habit for many Mancunians.

But if you save the £20 every Friday - after the 52 weeks are up you'll end up with just over £1,000.

The 52-week challenge - save £1,378

Start with £1 on week 1.

Add £2 on week two, £3 on week 3 and continue the pattern until week 52.

The Monday to Sunday challenge - save £1,456

Save £1 on Monday, £2 on Tuesday and continue until you reach £7 on Sunday.

If you do this repeatedly for a year you will save £28 a month - that's £1,456 by the end of the year.

The £2020 for 2020 challenge - save £2,020

If you can spare £38.85 a week, you could end up with just over £2,020 by the last week of the year.

For couples saving for a home together - sacrificing £20 a week each could help you secure a better house deposit in just 12 months.

If you don't mind how much money you save - one of the following challenges might be more suited to you.

The fiver challenge

Save every £5 note you get throughout the year and count your savings on December 31.

The loose change challenge

Whenever you break a note - save the change.

Remove change from your purse, wallet or pockets daily so you're not tempted to spend.

If you don't think saving all your change is achievable - save the silvers only or choose a particular coin to put away like every 20p.
