Monet and Modigliani paintings set to sell for high prices at Sotheby's auction

An iconic Monet and works by Modigliani are among the lots set to make tens of millions of pounds at a Sotheby’s auction next week.

Claude Monet’s 1908 work Nympheas, from his water lily series, is expected to fetch £35 million.

It has been owned by the same family since 1932, and this is the first time that it has come to auction.

To mark the occasion, the auction house has transformed a corner of its New Bond Street premises into a garden inspired by Monet’s home in Giverny, Normandy, where he painted the water lilies.

The sale of Impressionist and modern art, which takes place over two days next week, also includes Modigliani’s portrait of an anonymous young man, valued at £24 million. Joan Miro’s work Peinture (L’Air) has a £15 million estimate.

The auction house is holding a free public viewing which opens today and runs until Wednesday.
