Monday’s best TV

Robin Lord Taylor as the Penguin in Gotham.
Robin Lord Taylor as the Penguin in Gotham.

Gotham
9pm, Channel 5

Clashing capos Maroni and Falcone bring all-out war to the streets of Gotham in the first-season finale, unaware that it’s all part of Penguin’s scheme to create a power vacuum into which he can triumphantly waddle. That’s bad news for lone good cop Jim Gordon. With a second season long confirmed, there’s a sense that the nominally gritty Gotham is clearing out some of its cartoonish gangsters to make more room for cartoonish supervillains, even if it still can’t quite figure out what to do with young Bruce Wayne. Springwatch 2015
8pm, BBC2

Michaela Strachan, Chris Packham and Martin Hughes-Games, heads full of facts and hair full of leaf bits, huddle in damp fleeces for another spell in Suffolk’s beauteous Minsmere nature reserve. Of all the ’watches, spring is best, with its frolicking otter babies, lusty wildfowl and eager hatchlings trampling one another for a gobful of worm. Also, Iolo Williams visits puffins in Scotland, and Springwatch Unsprung on Wednesday features Vic Reeves, among others. Julia Raeside

Churchill: When Britain Said No
9pm, BBC2

Why did the country that had been happily led by Churchill in wartime turn so abruptly against him in peacetime? This film finds a number of plausible explanations. Experts including Juliet Gardiner and Max Hastings assess the man’s unworldliness (he’d never been on a bus), his lack of empathy with working people, and the miscalculation that led the Conservative party to dwell on Churchill’s achievements, rather than focusing on what voters wanted more than anything else: to look to the future. John Robinson

Benefits Street
9pm, Channel 4

There are more tales of crime and deprivation on Kingston Road in Stockton-on-Tees this week, as the contentious doc continues with more legal woes for sunbed-loving drug dealer Maxwell. The majority of residents are not portrayed as tabloid-ready caricatures, however, but as a close-knit community on the right side of the law: Sue prepares to become a grandmother again, while best friend Julie – whose disabled son Reagan has passed away since the programme was filmed – celebrates her birthday with family. Hannah J Davies

Game of Thrones
9pm, Sky Atlantic

Another week, another unpleasant and unnecessary rape scene in Game of Thrones. The widespread opprobrium in response to Ramsay Snow’s sexual assault of Sansa Stark – including feminist blog The Mary Sue deciding to cease covering the show altogether – suggests that the creators might need to consider how they handle such issues in the future. Hopefully, we’ll witness a reversal in Sansa’s fortunes this week as she tries to talk to Theon, while back at The Wall, Jon Snow prepares for conflict. Gwilym Mumford

Episodes
10pm, BBC2

This week Bev and Sean have a visitor from the UK, the chap who Sean used to write with before Bev came along. Bev hates him – rightly so, he’s a smarmy so-and-so who attempts to work in snide references to Yoko Ono every time they meet. But it turns out he’s more unpleasant than she previously thought, to the extent that it might put their latest project in some not-inconsiderable jeopardy. Meanwhile, Carol and new boss Helen get a ropey show pitch from Merc, and Matt rebonds with ex-wife Diane. Ben Arnold

Horrible Histories: Awesome Alfred the Great Special
5pm, CBBC

One of the all-time great kids’ shows returns for series six, adjusting to the loss of the original cast by organising itself into special episodes focusing on a single historical figure. Tom Rosenthal is the perfect choice to play crap-haired milquetoast Alfred the Great, thrust on to the throne after the deaths of all four of his elder brothers. He fights a constant battle against both the Vikings and haemorrhoids, and we learn that he didn’t burn any cakes and that the Scandinavians brought sarcasm to England. Jack Seale
