Monday's best bets on TV

A look at the top events at the Rio Olympics on Monday:

Track and field

The issue of the world's fastest man was settled Sunday night, leaving things a little less interesting on Monday. The big race is the men's 800 meters, considered one of the most difficult because it's neither a sprint nor a distance race. David Rudisha of Kenya is the favorite and current world-record holder. Brandon McBride of Canada will be one of his main challengers. Other finals include the women's 400 and men's pole vault.

Beach volleyball

The picturesque location on Copacabana Beach will likely have some great showdowns between the United States and Brazil. One major test will be Monday in the quarterfinals where Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena will go against defending world champions Alison and Bruno from Brazil. Dalhausser is playing with a new partner and is looking for some of the magic he had in 2008 when he won the gold medal.

Basketball

The underachieving U.S. men's team has the day off but the schedule offers one of the more intriguing matchups before play moves to the knockout rounds. Argentina, 3-1 in pool play, will go against Spain, the two-time defending silver medalist. Spain beat Lithuania by 50 points in its last game and is led by Pau Gasol. Spain needs a win or a Brazil loss to qualify for the next round.
