Moncreiffe Primary School is celebrating a milestone moment with the unveiling of their recently refurbished mural wall.
It is believed that when the school officially opened the first children to attend created the painted wall, one of whom is now the parent to a current P5 pupil.
A successful application earlier in 2022 by the school - together with the Parent Council - for a £2000 Living Communities grant to update the artwork has led to a whole school project.
Headteacher Amanda McIntyre explained: “We wanted to explore with the children how the Moncreiffe area has changed and evolved over time.
“We worked with parents and grandparents and the wider community to explore how the local area around Moncreiffe has changed.
“This was a way for our children to understand their heritage, which aspects have remained constant and which have evolved over time.
“Our learners gathered this information in a range of different formats, for example through meetings with community groups, interviewing parents and older relatives, digitally recording memoirs, accessing local archives, and working with local historians.
“All of their research then fed back into the creation of their design ideas.
“We had a lot of support from the local community and parents throughout the project – one of our parents very kindly prepared the wall for us in their spare time.
“Each class has played their part in producing the mural, and all of our children have a tracing of their hand incorporated into the artwork.”
Helen O’Brien, a local artist, came into each class and worked with the children to create their individual designs. From these, three designs for the wall were created.
From there, each house captain led their house to vote on a design and these were collated across the school to decide on the chosen design.
Alongside the new mural wall, a film has been made of the project showing its progress from the early stages of research and design through to the finished wall.
The film will have its premiere showing as part of a celebration event, to be attended in the near future by Sheena Devlin, Perth and Kinross Council’s executive director (Education and Children’s Services).
