Monaghan's Darren Hughes has eight-week ban upheld

Darren Hughes has failed in his bid to have an eight-week ban thrown out.

The Monaghan footballer was handed the suspension after getting involved in a flashpoint on the field during the Farney County’s qualifier win over Fermanagh last Sunday week.

Hughes was acting as a water carrier owing to the fact that he is currently out with an ankle injury which it was hoped he would be in position to return from in the coming weeks.

However, having had his proposed ban for “any type of physical interference with an opposing player” imposed by the Central Hearings Committee, the Scotstown man will only become available for selection again this year if Monaghan were to reach the All-Ireland final.

Hughes now has the option of taking his case to the Central Appeals Committee.
