Monaghan haulier Ronan Hughes extradited to UK over 39 Essex lorry deaths

The alleged ringleader of a criminal gang wanted for the deaths of 39 migrants in a lorry container has been put on a plane to England and handed over to UK authorities.

Co Monaghan haulier Ronan Hughes, 40, is wanted to face 39 counts of manslaughter and conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration into the UK.

The bodies of eight females and 31 males were found in an industrial park in Essex last October.

Hughes was arrested by gardai in April at his bungalow in Silverstream, Tyholland, on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued by UK authorities.

The High Court ordered Hughes’ surrender to the UK on June 12.
