Monaco Grand Prix schedule 2024

Monaco Grand Prix: preview

We've been here before, haven't we. Charles Leclerc is in pole position for today's Monaco Grand Prix, after a superb drive on a circuit he knows like the back of his hand. These, after all, are the streets he grew up on, though they haven't been kind to him on previous racedays.

He's taken pole here twice before, three times if you count F2. One of those races ended early due to a suspension problem, one never got started because of a driveshaft issue that emerged while he was making his way to the grid, and the other has been immortalised in Ferrari's strategic hall of shame.

Grid position is of paramount importance at the Monaco Grand Prix, because the streets are so narrow they're nigh-on impossible to overtake on in the race itself. But in Leclerc's case, that theory has borne no fruit.

What's almost equally incredible is that Max Verstappen is nowhere near the front row. The spot alongside the Ferrari man belongs instead to Oscar Piastri, who's yet to score a podium this year but is a genuine contender now that his McLaren has received the same upgrades as that of his teammate.

Speaking of, Lando Norris in in the fourth grid slot, a nose behin Carlos Sainz, with George Russell fifth and Verstappen sixth. The reigning champion's domanant start to the season means hie's still 48 points clear of Leclerc in the drivers' standings, but the wins aren't going to be anywhere near as easy to come by from here on in.
