Mona McSharry takes bronze in world 100m breaststroke final with Irish record

Ireland's Mona McSharry has claimed a bronze medal in the world 100m breaststroke final in Abu Dhabi today.

Setting a new Irish record time of 1:03.92, the Sligo native continued her memorable week in the pool at the World Short Course Swimming Championships.

McSharry, who is currently based from the University of Tennessee in the United States, was beaten by Tang Quinting of China at 1:03.47, with Sweden's Sophie Hansson in silver in a time of 1:03.50.

The 21-year-old was pipped for bronze in the 50m breaststroke final on Friday by Hansson, but managed to also smash the Irish record on that outing as she recorded a strong time of 29.59.

McSharry's medal is the second for Ireland after Ellen Walshe's silver medal in the 400m individual medley.
