Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic helped the United States overtake Mexico in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying standings on Friday night.
It has been a difficult season for the 23-year-old thus far and, in what can surely be considered good news for Thomas Tuchel, the former Borussia Dortmund attacker did not start the game in Ohio as he continues to fight his way back up to full fitness.
Pulisic’s introduction in the 70th minute, however, helped the USMNT turn the tide at the TQL Stadium and the Chelsea man headed in the opener only five minutes after his introduction before Weston McKennie added another.
“It was incredible, and the fans made it all that much better,” said Pulisic after the game.
“They really came out tonight. It was so loud in there. Moments like that are what we live for.”
“It was a crazy game for sure but it’s what we expected. It was tough to break them down. I’m happy I could come in and help us out. In the end, that’s three huge points.”
The United States now top the group ahead of Mexico on goal difference and will play Jamacia in Kingston on Tuesday.
