A video has emerged of Tanaiste Leo Varadkar getting a drink thrown over him by a young woman while filming.
The footage, believed to be in Merrion Square, shows a woman approach Varadkar before firing a drink all over him.
The woman then proceeds to sprint away from the scene leaving the Fine Gael leader to clean himself up.
Gardai have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
A garda spokesperson said: "A garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "Gardaí are investigating an incident that occurred in Merrion Square today, 18/09/2020, at approximately 3pm. Investigations are ongoing."
People on social media have widely condemned the attack with many saying it is a step too far.
Darren Cleary tweeted: "You can dislike Leo Varadkar, you can criticise his policies, you can disagree with him, but this is nasty and unnecessary thing to do."
Former politician Noel Rock said: "Jesus, this is a poxy thing to do, regardless of your political view."
The Tanaiste, who is currently busy at a Cabinet meeting deciding on the latest Dublin restrictions, has not yet commented on the incident.
