Moment tourist plane and helicopter crash mid-air over the Alps, killing seven

Shocking footage has emerged showing the final moments of a helicopter which collided with a tourist plane over the Italian Alps, killing seven people.

The clip, released by Soccorso Alpino, the Italian Mountain rescue team, captures the mid-air collision just minutes after the helicopter took off on January 25.

The two GoPro cameras containing the footage were found at the crash site near the ski resort of La Thuile, in the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy.

The video combines two separates views of the crash - one which appears to be taken from the aircraft and the other from the front window of the helicopter.

The crash sent debris flying into the air and the two aircraft began spinning out of control before they plunged to the ground.

A police spokesman told Italy's RAI radio that the airplane appeared to enter Italian airspace without informing local air traffic control.

The helicopter was unaware of the French four-seater Jodel aircraft coming in to land.

The two crashed just minutes after the helicopter took off.

The National Alpine and Speleological Rescue service sent a team to the site immediately after receiving reports from the Aosta Valley rescue.

Rescue officials confirmed five people have died at the scene but the death toll rose to seven when they found two bodies in the snow the next day.

The two survivors  - Philippe Michel, the pilot of the French four-seater Jodel aircraft and a German national on board the helicopter - were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Among those died in the crash were French, Swiss, Italian and Belgian nationals.
